Saturday Mass Time Change?

Mar 20, 2015

The Question Posed

Recently, a proposal was brought to the Parish Pastoral Council to change our Saturday Mass from 5:00pm to 4:00pm. The Council seemed to be favorable to the change. However, I do want to get feedback from more people who attend that Mass. I have thought of some of the pros and cons.

  1. More time for an activity Saturday evening (dinner, a party, shopping, house-cleaning)
  2. Driving to and from Mass would be in daylight year-round

  1. Less time to complete work at home during the afternoon (grass cutting, gardening, car washing)
  2. Mass moves farther and farther from Sunday, the Lord's Day. When does it stop? (actually 4:00pm is as early as the Church allows.)

Please express your opinion.

A couple of people have called saying that they could not get the blog to work. Please understand that I have to approve your comment before it can be posted. That prevents someone from writing something offensive and having it appear on St. Frances Cabrini's website. Think about it; it really does have to be done that way.

I would prefer a 4:00 PM mass during the fall and winter. I think the earlier mass gives a little more daylight after mass to get home and see a little better if the weather is bad. The 5:00 PM mass in the spring and summer is fine because you have time before mass and after mass to still do things that you want or need to do.

Saturday night Mass should be left at 5 or moved back to 6 as it was previously...
    1. working, a later Mass allows more time to get to Mass
    2. If it is our only day off and Mass is at 4 we need to stop what we are doing at 2:00pm to get ready for Mass
    3. if this does not work out perhaps a 7 or 7:30am Mass on Sunday could be added.

    Father Tim:

I would like to note on the Saturday Mass time. Our whole family (6 of us) would prefer the 4 o'clock time.

When attending mass on Saturday, 5:00 is more convenient for me than 4:00. Thank you.

I prefer 5pm in the summer because I'd rather take advantage of the daytime summer sun. 4pm is too early.

I prefer the 5 pm mass time as opposed to the 4 pm time. Thank you.

I prefer 4:00 pm dusting the winter months and 5:00 pm during the summer months.

Ron and I would like to see an earlier mass for Saturday in the winter months.

Ron and I would like a change in the Saturday mass from 5 to 4 in the winter months. Driving in the dark is difficult for us.

My suggestion would be a hybred. I would Saturday Mass to be at 4:00 pm in the fall and winter and at 5:00pm in the spring and summer.

Please leave the mass at 5 p.m. 4 is too early.

We would prefer mass stay at 5 p.m. With summer coming and outside chores to do, 4:00 p.m. would be to early. I know that hour doesn't seem like much, but it is. Even if it was not getting warmer weather we would still want mass at 5 p.m. Thank You

Do not change. Leave the Mass at 5:00pm.

    Like it at 4''00

    Father Tim:
We appreciate the opportunity to give our opinion on this important subject. We both work lots of hours during the week. Saturday night is our date night. We go to mass then have our evening together. Sunday is catch up and nice family dinner. I don't want to be selfish but we do not want to change to 4:00 pm. We are not old enough to eat dinner at 5:00 pm yet LOL

Me and my wife like the 4:00 mass during EST and 5:00 mass on DST.

    Hi Father Tim,
I appreciate your wanting feedback before making a final decision on the time change. Personally I am against the 4 pm time change. I work every Saturday at Bridgeport library until 4 pm, so it would make it impossible for me to be at mass on Saturdays, thus you would not only lose an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist at that mass, but with Tom not attending Saturday mass, you would lose a lector/usher . I know we are short on those ministries already, so just thought I'd point that out. I will respect whatever your final decision is, and as always, thanks for all you do for the parish.

In the summer 4 pm is to early it would be fine in winter months to be earlier. I enjoyed the first 25 years of my life when Saturday Evening Mass was 7 pm then on Sunday we had an 8 am and 10 am, I believe it was like that until Fr. Reisbeck came to Colerain.

  • Steve OlinskiPosted on 3/21/15

I prefer the 5 PM Mass. 4 PM is to early, I need to take care of Sat. jobs.

I thought the main reason for a Saturday evening mass, is for the people who work and can't make it to Sunday mass. If you are working day turn on Saturday and finish your shift at 3:30 pm, an earlier mass would be very difficult to attend. Therefore, one needs to step back and think of the real reason for attending a Saturday mass.
